Gabby Class of 2027
Some responses may be paraphrased for clarity.
Gabby is a non-residential junior (Class of 2027) from Muncie, IN. She discovered the Academy from her brother, who graduated in 2020. She was encouraged to apply for her sophomore year because of the opportunities available.
What made you decide to apply?
“While I had an enjoyable time at my previous school, I was looking for more classes to take, more credits, and a new community to expose myself to. I was attending the same school for almost my entire life, so I wanted a fresh start.”
Gabby is actively involved in both the Muncie and Academy communities. She leads the Muncie Central percussion ensemble which received two state championship titles. Additionally, she serves as a peer assistant, Student Ambassador, teacher’s assistant, National Honors Society member, and as the treasurer for the Indiana Academy’s Student Government.
How is the Academy preparing you for life?
“My time management skills have absolutely sky-rocketed since coming here. I have grown to become much more independent, especially with my work and lifestyle. I feel more confident to go up to teachers and ask them for help during their office hours, or even just ask for help from any of my peers as well. Living residentially, I am used to not having to rely on my parents for everything, and I can already tell that I will be prepared to live in the college dormitory because of the skills I have achieved and sharpened here at the Academy.”
Welcome Week is Gabby’s fondest Academy memory. During her sophomore year, Welcome Week is what made her realize she belonged here. She immediately met new students and was able to participate in different activities to get to know her peers.
What advice would you give to students interested in the Academy?
“For new and prospective students, the workload at the Academy can seem difficult– however there are so many resources to help you. Teachers, tutors, teacher’s assistants, and your other fellow peers are all determined to help you succeed even if it doesn’t feel like it at first. I have found the work and activities I am participating in or have completed extremely rewarding, and I would not want it any other way. The Academy is a completely new environment and sometimes it can seem overwhelming, but the best thing to know is that you are not alone.”
After graduating from the Academy in 2027, Gabby plans to study pharmaceutical sciences and is considering serving as a percussion technician to maintain her passion for music.
