Travis, IASMH Class of 1995

Dr. Travis Nesbitt Class of 1995

Where do you currently live?
The Mar Vista neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.

What kind of work do you do?
After studying and working in international relations, I made a career pivot to education and for the last 20+ years, I have been working as an educational researcher, teacher, and administrator. For the last 14 years, my professional home has been the Archer School for Girls, a progressive independent school in Los Angeles dedicated to advancing research and practice around how girls learn best.

Any personal information you’d like to share?
My husband Jon and I have two kids, a 10 year-old son and an 8 year-old daughter. We love spending time outdoors and enjoying all of the natural beauty California has to offer, from skiing to hiking to time on the beach. My time on the Burris volleyball team actually led me to my husband as we met playing beach volleyball while in graduate school at UCLA!

How did you first hear about the Academy?
I first heard about the Academy from students from my high school who were in the inaugural and second class, from the promotional Einstein poster that stared at me daily from the bulletin board in our school cafeteria and from Pete Freiburg, then Admissions Director, who toured the state and did an information session at the Crawfordsville Public Library.

What is your greatest memory about your time at the Academy?
That’s tough, because there are many! Most revolve around the transformational impact my Spanish teacher, Liliana Missair, had on me and the other students in our class from books we read to our May Term courses on Hispanic Cinema to a trip to Chicago to explore the contributions of Spanish-speaking artists and architects.

How did the Academy prepare you for your life now?
The Academy inspired curiosity, expanded my worldview, fostered my intellectual development, built my confidence and exposed me to brilliant peers and educators, creating opportunities that I never would have had otherwise.

How do you stay involved and support the Academy?
I am currently a member of the Alumni Advisory Board, I have helped organize reunions for the class of 1995, I donate annually and I help to spread the word about the incredible opportunity the Academy provides.
