Brooklyn Class of 2026
Some responses may be paraphrased for clarity.
Brooklyn is a senior (Class of 2026) residential student from Merrillville, Indiana. She discovered the Academy after receiving an invitation in the mail to apply.
What made you decide to apply to the Academy?
“The greater number of opportunities the Academy had compared to the high school I first
attended made me decide to apply.”
As a residential student, Brooklyn appreciates attending programs and participating in extracurriculars without having to leave her living space. In her free time, she enjoys exploring Ball State’s campus.
Outside of her coursework, Brooklyn is involved in several extracurricular activities. She is the president of the Black Student Union, vice president of the Indiana Academy’s Student Government, and the treasurer of the Hearts in Action club. Additionally, she serves as a peer assistance, a teaching assistant for the American Literature course, and a member of the National Honor Society.
How is the Academy preparing you for life?
“The Academy has helped me refine my time management skills through balancing coursework, extracurriculars, and free time. Also, attending the Academy has prepared me for the lecture-style classes I will take in college. Previously, I was accustomed to doing most of my assignments during class time; however, with lecture-style classes, assignments are to be completed outside of class, and class time is used for taking notes and learning the material.”
Brooklyn’s favorite memory was her May Term course, Adventure in Korean Culture, taught by Dr. Jeongsoo Pyo. This course taught students about Korean culture through cuisine and music.
“I loved being able to cook and try new foods every day,” Brooklyn said.
Although Brooklyn engulfed herself in the Academy culture in many ways, she does wish she participated more in different ways, such as by playing tennis or participating in some of the creative-style clubs.
What are your plans after graduation?
“I have not settled on a career yet; however, I plan to double major in economics and philosophy. Additionally, I have gained a newfound interest in international business, so I may also pursue that while in college.”
For students interested in attending the Academy, Brooklyn recommends attending a Shadow Day because it gives you a feel for the school and how classes are more discussion-based.
What else would you like to share?
“I would recommend the Academy to any student looking for a greater challenge than their local school can provide. While the Academy is more rigorous, it also provides resources to ensure students succeed, through tutoring, teaching assistants, and teachers’ office hours. Additionally, it is easier to become more involved within the school and the surrounding community through the extracurricular activities available at the Academy.”
