Exceptional Students
Layliana, IASMH Class of 2025

Layliana Class of 2025

Where are you from and how did you first hear about the Academy?
As a transplant from Jay County, where I attended through 7th grade, to Burris, where I attended through my sophomore year, I grew familiar with IASMH. I live in Muncie, IN, and I am a non-residential student of the Academy.

What made you decide to apply?
As I explored what it meant to become an “academite” through other students and information on the school website, I knew I wanted to be a part of an academic community that challenged me to grow and become more independent. I was also interested in the opportunities of being involved with the Academy and all it has to offer.

What is your greatest memory about your time at the Academy?
Although not a traditional residential student, my fondest memory here was when I got invited for a sleepover as a non-residential student. This invitation came with more than just sleeping over at someone else’s place. This was my first real taste of what it was like to be a part of the Academy beyond academics. I had the opportunity to experience the residential life of an Academy student, and I had loads of fun. I spent the day with my friends and went to dinner with them for the first time, took the famous walk to Walgreens, and got to experience Burris’ playground at night.

What are some of your extracurricular activities?
Extracurriculars I take part in include being a team captain of the basketball team, playing the saxophone in our school’s band, being a member of the Student Equity Council, and being an Academy Ambassador. I am also a co-president of the Middle Eastern and North African Student Union, co-president of iKNITiative (a fiber arts club), and president and founder of Roblox Club.

How has the Academy prepared you for life?
The Academy has paved a path for what my life would look like beyond being a traditional high school student. By providing a college setting, I’ve gained a better sense of independence and feel more prepared for my journey towards adulthood. My experience at the Academy has helped me develop better time management, organization skills, and become more responsible as a student and a person. It has also helped me to gain an insane amount of independence and maturity since joining the community.

What are your plans after graduation?
Though spending most of my life with an undecided college and career path, I have recently found an interest in pursuing a marketing degree. I hope to spend my life traveling and want to find a career choice that can make that possible.
