College Counseling Services for Parents

The parent role in the college search process is one of support and encouragement. As wise sounding boards and advice-givers, parents, along with other advisors, are the supporting cast. There will come a time in the process where parents will need to let go without bowing out. Until then, parents will need to assist the students with open-mindedness, intelligence, honesty and a sense of humor. The process can include stress and disappointment. Parents should be emotional resources that provide positive reinforcement and comfort. This time of self discovery, individuation, and learning how to make complex decisions that have long-term consequences in a mature and methodical manner is what you have been preparing your student for their entire life. With your support and active participation the college search and selection process will be a positive and growth enhancing endeavor that you and your student can share and remember forever.
