Alumni Spotlight: Blake Johnson ’05

Blake Johnson (Academy class of 2005) serves as Associate Director of Communications at Complete College America, a national nonprofit that works with states to significantly increase the number of Americans with a college degree or credential of value. Since graduating from the Academy, he has served in a variety of roles related to public policy, strategic communications, and public relations.

Prior to taking his current position at CCA, Johnson served as Press Secretary and then Communications Director for a Midwestern member of the United States Congress. In that role, he oversaw all public communications strategy, served as an on-the-record spokesman and chief speechwriter, and advised the Congressman on all matters as a member of his senior staff.

Johnson has also served as a political communication strategist through multiple election cycles, working as the Democratic Party Communications Director during municipal elections in Indianapolis and as a senior advisor for a United States House race in which the candidate secured a dominant 63% of the vote. He has helped candidates with media training, speechwriting, and print design, and in his spare time, continues to advise candidates in local, state and federal races.

Johnson earned a BA in Political Science and Communications from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL, as well as an MA in Education from Marian University in Indianapolis, IN. He is an alumnus of Teach for America where he taught English Language Arts and leadership development to students with perpetual behavior issues. He currently lives in Indianapolis.
